BRAZIL: Assessing the strength of the evangelical vote

Last week Edir Macedo, the leader of the evangelical Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD, Universal Church of the Kingdom of God), and one of the wealthiest men in Brazil, opened the largest religious building in the country. The Temple of Solomon, located in the city of São Paulo’s eastern zone, is 100,000 square metres, and its façade contains stone hewed from Hebron, in the West Bank, where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are said to be buried. Its cost has been estimated at R$685m (US$300m). The temple’s political significance was highlighted by the fact that President Dilma Rousseff, and Vice-President Michel Temer, attended its inauguration on 31 July.
