Environmental concerns

Almost immediately after the federal government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto secured final approval of its flagship energy sector reform, designed to boost activity in the hydrocarbons sector by allowing increased private sector participation, Mexico got a stark reminder of some of the dangers of increased activity in the extractive industries. Two major environmental accidents involving the mining giant, Grupo México, and the state-owned oil firm, Pemex, which took place just days apart, have highlighted the major environmental risks associated with the extractives sector.
