PRD gets senate presidency

For the first time in its history, the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), Mexico’s main left-wing party, has formally assumed the presidency of both the federal senate and the federal chamber of deputies, after Senator Miguel Barbosa and Deputy Silvano Aureoles were elected to head the respective chambers ahead of the period of ordinary congressional sessions starting on 1 September. This is a significant watershed for Mexican politics and the PRD, which is more accustomed to playing an opposition role. Its promotion to congressional leadership came about thanks to the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), which is seeking to ensure governability for the federal executive led by President Enrique Peña Nieto. The question now is whether this political experiment will work, or whether the PRI will come to regret its manoeuvre.
