PRI pushes for its own referendum

In recent months all the talk has been about how the Left will gather signatures in order to try and stage a public referendum next year to annul the recent energy reform driven through congress by the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto. Now, however, the federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) wants a referendum of its own – to downsize congress. The proposed referendum is likely to strike a chord with a public largely disenchanted with politicians. But the opposition is up in arms about what it sees as a blatantly anti-democratic attempt by the PRI to plunge Mexico back into yesteryear by conspiring against political pluralism.
