PARAGUAY: Military to remain deployed in the north

The late July claim that a cell of the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (EPP) had been ‘blocked’ has proved premature. Instead, the government led by President Horacio Cartes has invoked recently approved legislation to extend the deployment of the military in the north of the country and has initiated court proceedings in absentia against EPP leaders. Ministers have reached a new consensus on the reason for the failure to ‘close’ recent operations against the guerrillas.
