REGION-US: ‘Front porch’ cooperation with Washington

At least two countries of Central America’s Northern Triangle — Guatemala and Honduras — have been persuaded to act as the ‘front porch’ of the US, halting the flow of migrants before they reach the US border. In one such arrangement, Guatemala has teamed up with Mexico. Their cooperation is not wholehearted and may sour as a result of the Barack Obama administration’s drive to fast-track deportations and such moves as Texas Governor Rick Perry’s decision to deploy the US national guard along the border.
