POLITICS: Social discontent grows after one year of Cartes

Since early August various civil society organisations in Paraguay have been staging public demos and strikes in repudiation of the government led by President Horacio Cartes. The growing social discontent poses a serious problem for President Cartes, who celebrated his first year in office on 15 August. Unless Cartes can get more people to subscribe to his government plan and in particular his efforts to pursue liberal economic policies with a prudent fiscal stance, this discontent may last his five-year term.
