ENERGY: Ambitious scheme to end gas subsidies takes off

The government is celebrating the positive uptake for its innovative initiative to replace Ecuador’s 3.5m gas kitchens with electric induction hobs within two years. Some 20,000 Ecuadoreans have registered for the government’s ‘efficient cooking’ programme—‘Cocción Eficiente del Gobierno’—the industry minister, Ramiro González, revealed on 18 September, one month after registration opened. The government is offering cash incentives to persuade the public to embrace the scheme, while touting its benefits for the environment and seeking to boost national industry in the process, as well as removing the fuel subsidy.
