Former president Francisco Flores (1999-2004) has become the first head of state in El Salvador’s history to be imprisoned on corruption charges. Flores turned himself in to the authorities in San Salvador on 5 September after disappearing without trace for the better part of this year (there was speculation he was hiding in Panama).
