Peña Nieto tables ambitious investment programme

“What now?” This was the question President Enrique Peña Nieto posed himself while presenting his second state-of-the-nation address (Informe) to assembled dignitaries in the national palace on 2 September. Peña Nieto, who was referring to the successful conclusion of his ambitious reform agenda contained within the cross-party ‘Pact for Mexico’ political agreement, wasted little time in answering his own question, announcing a huge public infrastructure investment programme over the remaining four years of his sexenio to revitalise the economy. At the heart of this is the revival of a problematic project to build a new international airport at a cost of M$120bn (US$9.2bn).
