Mexico’s Jalisco state held a non-binding popular consultation on the legalisation of marihuana for medicinal use on 17-21 September. The result was definitive. Of the more than 13,000 people that took part, 60% said they were in favour of permitting the use of marijuana for therapeutic purposes, as long as it had been prescribed by a doctor. The result is encouraging for the many advocates of the legalisation of marihuana, who argue that this could help reduce the drug trafficking and related violence that has long plagued Mexico.
