GUATEMALA: Unclear spate of violence close to the capital
A three-day spate of violence that claimed 11 lives in San Juan Sacatepéquez, a municipality only 31 kilometres away from the capital, led the government led by President Otto Pérez Molina to declare a ‘state of prevention’ which involves the suspension of civil rights and to dispatch a large combined contingent of police and soldiers to contain the situation. The precise sequence of events that led to the clashes remains unclear: the authorities have issued 36 arrest warrants against those suspected of direct involvement and of acts of intimidation.
