EL SALVADOR: Flores case could have electoral impact - again

El Salvador underwent a watershed moment in its modern history in September. Former president Francisco Flores (1999-2004), who had vanished into the ether for the best part of 2014 suddenly returned to El Salvador on 5 September whereupon he handed himself over to the authorities in San Salvador and subsequently became the country’s first head of state to be imprisoned on corruption charges. He awaits trial. It is noteworthy that the right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) is moving to sever all links with Flores who was elected on the Arena ticket and was a party stalwart. Arena is acutely aware that his trial is likely to play out during the campaign for legislative elections next March and could seriously damage its image.
