A crucial election in Guatemala

“The most politicised election… for 30 years” is how one human rights activist described the recent election of Guatemala’s 13-member supreme justice court (CSJ) and 126 magistrates for 42 appeals’ courts. The election of the justices and their alternates for new five-year terms has again exposed the weakness of Guatemala’s institutions, as well as the limits of the United Nations (UN)-backed anti-impunity commission in Guatemala (Cicig). It also raises fresh concerns about the separation of powers within the country.
