HAITI: Closing a chapter?

The unexpected death on 4 October of former president Jean-Claude ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier (1971-1986), 63, from a heart attack, adds a further element of uncertainty to growing political tensions stoked by the continued delay in holding legislative and municipal elections. It comes as the government led by President Michel Martelly has been increasingly accused of targeting another of Haiti’s most divisive figures – populist former president and government opponent Jean-Bertrand Aristide (1991; 1994-1996; 2001-2004).
