As Uruguay’s presidential race heads down the closing straight, President José Mujica’s offer to accept on behalf of the nation six inmates from the US detention camp in Guantánamo, Cuba, has dominated the electoral debate. Mujica launched a ferocious attack on the main opposition Partido Nacional (PN) after its presidential candidate, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, said he would reverse the decision if elected.
