POLITICS: Political temperature rises

As Uruguay’s presidential race heads down the closing straight, President José Mujica’s offer to accept on behalf of the nation six inmates from the US detention camp in Guantánamo, Cuba, has dominated the electoral debate. But with opinion polls showing public hostility to Mujica’s gesture and pointing towards a very tight second round run-off in November between Lacalle Pou and former president Tabaré Vázquez (2005-2010), who is running again this year for the ruling left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition, Mujica backtracked, leaving everything up in the air.
