EL SALVADOR: Arena jettisons Quijano

Internal divisions have emerged in the main right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) over its candidate for the plum post of mayor of San Salvador. It was widely assumed that the incumbent mayor, Norman Quijano, would seek re-election in next March’s municipal (and legislative) elections. This, however, will not now happen. The reason for this is not entirely clear but judging by some of the comments from the Arena hierarchy it relates to the need to ‘renovate’ the party. There was pressure for just such a renovation after Quijano (albeit narrowly) failed to win the presidency for Arena last March but that pressure has mounted since the scandal surrounding former president Francisco Flores (1999-2004) has started to embroil senior party figures.
