MEXICO: From crime to political takeovers

The killings and mass abduction of students in Iguala, Guerrero, carried out jointly by the municipal police and a criminal gang that controls the city, has put the spotlight on a development already revealed in Michoacán: the takeover of towns and regions in Mexico by organised crime, largely obscured by the preoccupation with inter-gang violence — which is not always a connected phenomenon.
