Obama congratulates Rousseff

Brazil: On 27 October the US embassy in Brazil issued a press release stating that “President Obama congratulates President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil on her re-election yesterday”. The press release continues “Brazil is an important partner for the United States and we are committed to continuing to work with President Rousseff to strengthen our bilateral relationship. The President looks forward to calling President Rousseff in the coming days to congratulate her personally and discuss how we can increase our collaboration to promote global security, prosperity, and respect for human rights, and increased bilateral cooperation on education, energy, trade, and other issues of mutual interest”. A day later in a televised interview, President Rousseff revealed that she held a phone conversation with President Obama in which the two agreed to meet at the side-lines of the 14-15 November G-20 meeting to be held in Cairns, Australia, to discuss the bilateral relations and the possibility of Rousseff scheduling a state visit to the US in the near future “We agreed to adopt the necessary measures to improve our strategic relation, including the reciprocal state visits in this second term”, Rousseff said. Last year Rousseff cancelled her scheduled state visit to the US in the wake of the spying scandal involving the US National Security Agency (NSA) after it was revealed that the NSA had intercepted communications from top Brazilian government officials including Rousseff herself.
