PERU: Playing down the surge in contract killings

The number of contract killings in Lima in the first nine months of the year is already higher than in the whole of last year. Interior minister Daniel Urresti, who blames the problem on a 1991 system that keeps only half on the national police (PNP) officers on the streets on any given day, has come in for strong criticism for having stated that the contract killings are less of a problem for the public at large than common crime.
