BRAZIL: Tough decisions expected in second term

“Not yet,” replied President Dilma Rousseff when asked whether she had decided on a new finance minister by journalists at the presidential palace on 5 November. Aloizio Mercadante, the cabinet chief, and one of those tipped for the post, was more forthcoming, indicating that a decision will be made “soon”. Most likely it will come before the G-20 meeting in Cairns, Australia, on 15 and 16 November. Whoever is chosen, tough decisions will have to be taken to restore the flagging health of Brazil’s economy.
