PRD plunged into internal crisis

Mexico’s main left-wing opposition Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) is facing “the most serious crisis in its 25 years of existence”, the founder of the party, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, claimed in an incendiary open letter to members of the executive leadership committee (CEN) as well as rank-and-file members on 17 November. Cárdenas called for the PRD leadership, including the party president, Carlos Navarrete, and secretary general, Héctor Miguel Bautista, to resign and for a provisional leadership to take over to recover the PRD’s credibility or risk the party disbanding. As we went to press on 26 November, Cárdenas himself resigned from the party.
