Iguala crisis impacts Peña Nieto at home and abroad

The domestic political crisis sparked in Mexico by the disappearance of 43 trainee teachers from the town of Iguala, Guerrero state [RM-14-11], continues to deepen, amid the authorities’ failure to locate the abducted victims. The public indignation over the case has resulted in near daily anti-government demonstrations across the country. Increasingly, the anger is directed at President Enrique Peña Nieto, who protestors are accusing of incompetent leadership. This is having a damaging impact on the government’s international image, particularly in Latin America itself, undermining Peña Nieto’s efforts to reassert Mexico’s political leadership in the region.
