Peña Nieto’s response to Iguala crisis met with scepticism

With protests over the Iguala abductions and killings continuing into their third month, a beleaguered President Enrique Peña Nieto has come up with a 10-point plan to address protestors’ demands that has been met with great scepticism. The plan includes proposals to reform the constitution, introduce new legislation and activate initiatives that have been lying idle for months. The proposed constitutional reforms enhance the federal government’s powers to override those of the states and municipalities; the one that has attracted most attention — and criticism — is the progressive disbanding of the municipal police forces and their replacement with single state-level forces.
