GUATEMALA: President Pérez Molina issues an apology

President Otto Pérez Molina issued a formal apology on behalf of the State and announced a compensation plan for 33 indigenous communities affected by the construction in 1978 of the US$944m Chixoy hydroelectric plant, in Baja Verapaz department, works that took place during the 1960-1996 civil war. Despite the historic apology, there is continued criticism of the right-wing Partido Patriota (PP) government for failing to meet the demands of the marginalised and impoverished indigenous sector.
