NICARAGUA: Questions over anti-poverty efforts

A local think tank, Fundación Internacional para el Desafío Económico Global (Fideg), in November released a study indicating that extreme poverty was on the rise. The report, which nonetheless found a drop in overall poverty, prompted some questions over the efficacy of the left-wing Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government’s social assistance schemes, including its flagship ‘Hambre Cero’ (Zero Hunger) programme. These schemes are partly funded by oil assistance from Venezuela, which was valued at US$236.4m in the first half of 2014 and remains controversial due to the government’s refusal to include it in the state budget.
