EL SALVADOR: Rising number of murders of police officers

The authorities have drawn a small measure of comfort from the fact that the number of homicides reported in October was the lowest in six months, but they were still enough to keep high the increase over last year. Though all agree that the street gangs known as maras are responsible for much of the continuing level of violence they have been disagreeing publicly about the reasons for this.
