COSTA RICA | ‘Mexican cartels arming locals’. On 13 November national prosecutor-general Jorge Chavarría told a meeting of business leaders at Ciudad Quesada in the north-central province of Alajuela that Mexican cartels have been arming Costa Ricans with automatic weapons such as AK-47 assault rifles to fight rivals. This, he said, had emerged from investigations into homicides and other acts of violence on San José. In one case, he added, the criminals were prevented from detonating a grenade (he did not elaborate on this).
