Shares in the state-controlled oil giant Petrobras fell to an almost ten-year low in mid-December. Tumbling oil prices and the consequent questions over the viability of the exploitation of Brazil’s pre-salt oil fields were significant factors in the stocks’ slide. But so too, is Operation Car Wash, the police investigation into the scheme to funnel kickbacks from contracts with Petrobras to the left-wing ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and its allies.
