The resurgence of the Michoacán militias

Following the unprecedented federal security intervention in Michoacán last year [RM-14-02], there was an expectation that order would gradually return to the troubled state. But with national and international attention still focused on the security crisis in neighbouring Guerrero, there are worrying signs of fresh lawlessness in Michoacán, with the disbanded ‘self-defence groups’ (armed local vigilantes) once again moving to impart their own brand of justice.
