After twelve years in power, the ruling left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) struggled to attract huge crowds to President Dilma Rousseff’s second inauguration on 1 January. Many of those in attendance were paid for their time, while senior opposition leaders were conspicuous by their absence. With the president’s new economic team eager to inform Brazilians that the next few years will be tough, there was little to cheer, even if the president claims that fiscal retrenchment can be achieved without sacrificing the social gains of previous PT governments.
