The government has successfully pushed through congress a wide-ranging new media law, courtesy of the slim majorities enjoyed by the ruling left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition in both chambers. The new legislation seeks, among other things, to end monopolies in the media sector; to regulate radio, television and other audiovisual services; and to allocate free-of-charge advertising spots, according to each individual party’s performance in the previous elections.
