POLITICS: Morales sworn in for a third term amid new challenges

President Evo Morales and his left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government took office for a third (five-year) term this month. With a two thirds majority in the bicameral legislature and control of eight of Bolivia’s nine regions, Morales’ comfortable victory in the October 2014 general elections [RA-14-10] grants him a very strong mandate to continue with the government’s flagship poverty reduction initiatives, which have ensured his continued high approval ratings. However significant challenges remain in the form of a pressing need to address judicial reform, as well as the less-favourable economic climate, stemming from the drop in international oil prices.
