CHILE: Staving off demands for tougher action

Despite a new string of acts of violence in the southern areas affected by the Mapuche conflict the government led by President Michelle Bachelet has dismissed a call from an association of farmers for a state of ‘exception’ (emergency) to be declared in the region of Araucanía in response to arson attacks on crops. Its argument is that these attacks have actually been curbed over the past year. A broader regional business association has mustered data on violence in 2014 in support of a call for tougher measures.
