PANAMA: Going after Martinelli

Last month Panama’s nine-member supreme court (CSJ) announced that it was opening an investigation into former president, Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014), for alleged corruption at the Programa de Ayuda Nacional (PAN), a government fund used for initiatives aimed at improving things like disaster mitigation, nutrition and housing. Commentators have remarked that while the claims of official corruption under Martinelli’s Cambio Democrático (CD) administration are nothing new in the sub-region (a fair few other former Central American presidents have faced similar allegations), the speed with which the new El Pueblo Primero (EPP) coalition government (led by President Juan Carlos Varela’s Partido Panameñista [PPA]) has responded, is. With the Panamanian public staging demonstrations in support of the efforts to bring Martinelli (who maintains his innocence but has fled the country) to justice, the case is likely to continue to attract regional attention.
