POLITICS: Bachelet bounces back – but for how long?

The definitive congressional approval of two key government initiatives – the first part of an education reform and an end to the binominal electoral system – has allowed the government led by President Michelle Bachelet to recover some political initiative. After President Bachelet’s popularity dropped to an all-time low in late 2014 – on a combination of the economic slowdown, public transport chaos and security concerns - the latest polls put her popularity back up for the first time in six months. How long this will last remains to be seen, amid allegations of influence trafficking involving the president’s son, Sebastián Dávalos Bachelet.
