URUGUAY: Iranian angle in Montevideo bomb scares

With Argentina embroiled in a political and judicial confrontation over an alleged government attempt to withdraw the charges against Iranian officials of involvement in the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires, it came as a shock that, according to an Israeli newspaper, Uruguay had expelled an Iranian diplomat for covertly gathering intelligence on the Israeli embassy in Montevideo. The expulsion was denied by the Uruguayan government, but the explanations left many unconvinced.
