El Salvador’s Sánchez Cerén on tenterhooks amid lengthy electoral count

Development: On 1 March El Salvador staged elections to renew the 84-seat legislative assembly and 262 mayoralties, including San Salvador, the country’s second most important elected post.

Significance: The legislative results will dictate whether President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, who took office just nine months ago, will have a majority for the remaining four years of his mandate with which to advance security, education and health reforms and social initiatives or whether the main right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) will be able to stymie him. Election day itself passed off without incident. The counting process has been protracted, however, owing to the introduction of new voting rules. This might account for why several candidates have succumbed to impatience and contravened an agreement with the supreme electoral tribunal (TSE) not to declare themselves victors before the final results are published.
