El Salvador: FMLN returns to power in San Salvador

Development: On 2 March Nayib Bukele proclaimed himself the victor of mayoral elections in San Salvador, returning the nationally ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) to power in El Salvador’s capital after two terms in opposition.

Significance: Losing San Salvador is a big blow for the right-wing Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena). But the manner in which Arena’s candidate, Edwin Zamora, conceded defeat, especially given the fact that the supreme electoral tribunal (TSE) has abandoned releasing preliminary results, reasserted the party’s democratic credentials after it responded to the March 2014 defeat in the presidential elections by calling on the armed forces to “make democracy”. Arena appears to have notched up some impressive wins elsewhere in the municipal elections but it could be several days before the TSE confirms these in addition to the new balance of power in the national legislative assembly.
