BRAZIL: ‘Operation Car Wash’ hits PMDB-PT alliance

While the names of many of the politicians accused of involvement in the corruption scheme at the State-controlled oil company Petrobras have yet to be revealed, the fact that Rodrigo Janot, the attorney general, wishes to pursue an investigation into Renan Calheiros, the president of the senate, and Eduardo Cunha, the president of the lower chamber of congress, will put severe strain on the government’s ability to pass legislation. Both men are from the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), which is nominally allied to the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). Both men suspect the government’s hand in Janot’s decision. The supreme court is due to decide whether to pursue an investigation into the two men, and 52 other individuals, by the end of this week.
