POLITICS: What do the protests mean for President Dilma Rousseff?

Estimates as to the number of protesters that turned out in cities across Brazil on 15 March varied enormously, but a consensus has arisen that total attendance was between one and two million. Early police reports that over a million had demonstrated in São Paulo alone turned out to be a massive overstatement; with the true figure closer to 210,000. Still, one million people is not a negligible number, regardless of the fact most of those protesters were from a specific subset of Brazilian society: the white, wealthy elite. So far, the government has responded cautiously, calmly and respectfully. But the big question is what, if anything, it can do to address such significant discontent.
