SECURITY & POLITICS: Vilmar Acosta

Since October 2014 Paraguay’s most wanted man, Vilmar ‘Neneco’ Acosta Marques was arrested by Brazilian authorities in early March. Acosta is wanted in Paraguay in connection with the murder of a well-known local journalist, Pablo Medina, a case that shocked Paraguay and sparked widespread concerns about the spread of ‘narcopolitics’ [RBS-14-11]. However, Acosta could also face criminal charges in Brazil and the Brazilian authorities have so far refused to hand him over to Paraguay, setting the stage for a potentially lengthy and prickly repatriation battle.
