‘Narcoempresas’ continue to thrive

An investigative report by the daily El Universal, based on information from the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac), has found that the number of so-called narcoempresas, Mexican firms suspected of links to major drug trafficking organisations, has been increasing in spite of heavier targeting by the Ofac since 2002. The report points out that despite being blacklisted by the Ofac under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, they have continued to operate freely in Mexico, with some even securing federal government contracts.
