Britain is strengthening the defences of the Falkland/Malvinas islands in response to the threat posed by Argentina’s planned acquisition of Russian Sukhoi Su-24 aircraft. This, at least, is what media headlines in Britain proclaimed in the last week of March, setting the scene for an expected statement to Parliament by defence minister Michael Fallon. The story was not new: it had been surfacing intermittently since late last year, mainly in the ‘popular’ press but promptly picked up and enhanced by others.
