Tracking criminals’ guns in Brazil

Most of the firearms seized by the police in São Paulo come from local sources, according to research being conducted by the nongovernmental Instituto Sou da Paz (ISP) and the state’s public prosecution service (MP-SP). Earlier research by ISP in three cities (jointly with the ministry of justice) found that seized weapons were not being destroyed as expeditiously as envisaged in the 2003 disarmament statute — because of a bottleneck in the judicial system.
