President Danilo Medina and his predecessor thrice president Leonel Fernández (1996-2000; 2004-2012) are locked in an undeclared internal power struggle within the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD).
Medina has been careful not to announce his intention to seek re-election. But he is so popular there is a move within the PLD to reform the constitution to allow him to stand for immediate re-election in May 2016. Fernández, who wants a fourth term in office, opposes this and has strong support within the party himself.
