El Salvador faces three years of stalemate after the official results from the legislative elections were finally published by the supreme electoral tribunal (TSE) on 27 March almost a month after voters cast their ballots. Neither the ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) nor the main right-wing opposition Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (Arena) will be able to gain a majority in the 84-seat legislative assembly even with the support of allies. The results were a setback for President Salvador Sánchez Cerén and will complicate his plan to ease through legislation increasing social investment and driving development.
