BRAZIL: Rio to ‘strengthen’ UPPs in Alemão & Penha complexes

After early April shootouts between police and drug gangs in the Complexo do Alemão claimed three ‘collateral’ victims, Rio governor Luiz Fernando Pezão, announced that the complex of 15 favelas would be ‘reoccupied’ by the state’s Polícia Militar (PM; paramilitary police) while newly trained officers are posted to the complex’s four police pacification units (UPPs) and the makeshift forward posts of these units are replaced by more permanent premises.
