POLITICS & ECONOMY: Troublesome Tía María

Protests against the US$1.4bn Tía María copper mining project in Peru’s southern region of Arequipa intensified in late March, after the government led by President Ollanta Humala expressed its backing for the controversial project. The protests again turned violent and deadly and the conflict is now a major concern for the government. While the Humala administration may want to avoid another damaging social conflict, the project is critical at time of slowing economic growth.
