Mexico’s western state of Jalisco has been the site of major armed clashes between the local security forces and presumed members of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) drug trafficking gang since the second half of March. The gang launched a major offensive against the security forces, in what the authorities believe is a reaction to the increased presence of official forces on CJNG territory. The scale and the fierceness of the attacks lend weight to the official view that as other gangs reel from successive blows by the security forces, CJNG is emerging as the country’s most powerful criminal organisation (see sidebar).
